We, too, fell in love with Abruzzo and all it has to offer. Once you come to this part of Italy, you will too. Here is what you need to know to plan your trip to Abruzzo.
Where is Abruzzo
When we told people we were moving to Abruzzo, many of our family and friends didn’t know much about it. Most visitors to Italy, especially those from North America, go to the other, well-known regions and don’t even know where this region is.
So, where is Abruzzo anyway?
Abruzzo is located in the heart of Italy. It borders the regions of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and southwest and Molise to the southeast. To the east is the breathtaking stretch of the Adriatic coastline. To the west lie the rugged peaks of the Apennine mountains.
Abruzzo is easily accessible and offers a chance to see a different side of Italy. It’s a region that’s not overrun with the crowds of the more tourist-heavy ones. Abruzzo’s diverse geography, with mountains, hills, lakes and coastline, offers a wealth of unique attractions and activities for all types of visitors.

How to get to Abruzzo
Getting to Abruzzo is pretty easy. Abruzzo’s main cities are well-connected and accessible from other parts of Italy and Europe. Once you arrive, getting around the region is easy, with various transportation options available, including buses, car rentals and trains that link major cities and towns.
The region’s main airport, Abruzzo Airport (PSR) between Pescara and Chieti, offers flights to and from major European cities. You can also fly into Rome and make your way to Abruzzo by car, train or bus. Abruzzo is well-served by Italy’s rail network, with major stations in Pescara, Teramo and L’Aquila providing easy access from other areas of the country.
- BY AIR: The region’s main airport is Abruzzo Airport (PSR) in Pescara. Rome’s Fiumicino Airport is a good alternative, followed by a train or bus ride to Abruzzo.
- BY TRAIN: Major stations in Pescara, Teramo and L’Aquila connect Abruzzo to major cities like Rome, Milan and Bologna.
- BY CAR: The A24 and A25 highways connect Abruzzo to Rome and other parts of Italy. Renting a car is a great way to explore. Major rental companies operate in the region, offering a range of vehicles to suit your needs.
- BY BUS: Regional and intercity buses provide affordable and frequent services throughout Abruzzo. There are also many routes operated by FlixBus, ClickBus and Prontobus to get you to and around Abruzzo.
If you prefer to drive, the A24 and A25 highways connect Abruzzo to Rome and other regions, making it an ideal option for road trips. Additionally, numerous bus services link Abruzzo to other parts of Italy, offering an affordable and comfortable travel alternative.

Packing for your trip to Abruzzo depends on the season and the activities you plan to do. Here’s a general guide to ensure you’re prepared for your adventure.

Accessories: Sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen are must-haves for sun protection. A light rain jacket and a small umbrella can be handy for unexpected weather. Consider bringing walking poles if you plan on doing a lot of hiking.
Miscellaneous: A reusable water bottle, a daypack for hikes, and a power adapter for your electronics. If you’re planning outdoor activities, consider packing a first-aid kit and insect repellent.
